How to Make a Basil Herb Skin Tonic

Basil is a large leaf herb that is great for the skin and is one of my personal favourite 'homemade' skin recipes, to help tone, cleanse and clear the skin. It can be grown at home easily and so is very cheap to prepare.

When employed in skin care products, Basil is a tonic freshener, producing an initial hot, then a cold feeling when put on the skin. Basil oil extract is thought of as detoxifying, as it invigorates slow and sluggish blood flow in the skin and can be used for acne vulgaris and minor skin infections. It is also thought to have an antiseptic action and to cancel out the toxins of insect bites and stings. Basil has always been regarded as a body tonic when taken as a drink. It has stimulating properties, giving a sense of well being, improving the mind and giving concentration. However, these latter properties have never been proven scientifically, however, that doesn't mean they aren't true.

How to Prepare the Tonic

The ingredients are: 4 teaspoons of dried basil leaf, 1 cup of boiling water and 3 tablespoons of witch hazel. Add the boiling water to the crushed basil in a small bowl and cover with a plastic wrap and leave to steep in the boiling water for 4 hours or until it is completely cool. Then remove and strain the basil leaves from the water using a strainer, until you are left with, a 'basil-smelling' water. Pour the basil smelling water into a small glass bottle and add 3 tablespoons of witch hazel.

Use this tonic, by pouring a small amount of it onto a cotton wool pad and gently, applying all over your face. Following this process, you will have a very clean and fresh skin that is toned, cleansed, cleared and purified. You will be amazed by the cleansing action of this herb, with a huge build up of dirt, grease and debris from the skin. The herb tonic will also, to a certain extent, clear and clean out your skin pores, which in turn will prevent pore blockage implicated in acne vulgaris, spots and boils.

When completed, you will have a natural and refreshing basil facial astringent and toner, to enliven your face and skin with. It also has the effect of removing and inhibiting excess skin sebum (grease). This appears to have a direct effect on the skin and the production of spots, thus slowing down the episodes of acne and spots.
